Picture shows: lady shaving off the discs in the Filing Room at Wood Norton. The new telediphone (early sound recording system) recordings await transcription on the left. The old ones (stored on the right) are filed, then shaved and used again. BBC Monitoring would use wax cylinders which could be shaved and re-used. Sometimes they were shaved very badly and the monitor might hear remnants of the previous recording, which could be confusing, especially if it was in the same language.
